Scrisorile către Moș Crăciun pot fi naive, stupide, comice, dar și emoționante până la lacrimi. Astfel este scrisoarea actorului Benedict Cumberbatch – pe care sigur îl știți din seria de filme TV „Sherlock” -, ce arată mai degrabă ca o rugăciune în care-l imploră pe Moș să aducă puțină magie copiilor în această lume în care granițele dintre inocență și responsabilitate, imaginație jucăușă și frig aproape sunt șterse, iar copiii nu mai au timp să fie copii.

Scrisoarea lui Cumberbatch este una dintre multele scrise de celebrități în cadrul Letters Live, serie de evenimente ce sărbătorește – la inițiativa unei edituri independente scoțiene, Canongate – „forța corespondenței literare”.

În fiecare an, Letters Live organizează întâlniri cu public unde oameni cunoscuți din lumea filmului sau a muzicii (cum ar fi Kylie Minogue, Sir Ben Kingsley, Russell Brand) citesc scrisori ce au aparținut unor personalități – Virginia Woolf, Elvis Presley, Richard Burton, David Bowie, Che Guevara ș.a.

Iar cu ocazia unor evenimente speciale – cum este National Letter Writing Day (sărbătorită pe 7 decembrie) -, prieteni vechi ai Letters Live, precum Cumberbatch (a cărui companie de film SunnyMarch a fost partener la anumite evenimente Letters Live), sunt invitați să scrie la rândul lor scrisori către alți prieteni –  iar Moș Crăciun este prietenul tuturor, nu-i așa?

Dacă Cumberbatch îi cere lui Moș Crăciun să le distragă copiilor atenția de la realitatea lumii de azi care a luat-o razna, ajutându-i să râdă mai mult și nu să plângă,

”It’s not for us to turn around and plead for your help with the environment, the migrant crisis, the NHS, education, food banks, human rights, fundamentalism and wars. Though God knows we need all the help we can get … you are for the children. Children who need some magic in a world where the borders between innocence and responsibility, playful imagination and cold, adult obstacles are continually shrinking. And this is what I’d like to ask you to help with. A little more time for those children to be children.”

You must love her to bits. You should come too, to share the load, but it would be an enormous inspiration for all of us to feel her awesomeness!”.

– sau chiar permisiunea de a întocmi un volum cu cele mai reușite scrisori din arhiva Moșului de la Polul Nord (Shaun Usher, autorul bestseller-ului Letters of Note):

“I would dearly love to compile a volume of notable letters plucked from your archive up there in the North Pole. A collection like no other. I can only imagine the emotions running through that postbag each year, the variety of stories you must be told, the connections you must make. We could include letters from children and the replies you somehow find time to write; a couple of your favourite job application letters from aspiring elves, and your tactful rejections; a few angry letters of complaint from eternally ungrateful kids; and maybe even some of the romantic letters between you and Mother Christmas that I’ve been told of by a helper who shall forever remain nameless. The obvious title for such a book would be SELECTED LETTERS OF FATHER CHRISTMAS, or perhaps DEAR SANTA. But for personal reasons I would suggest LETTERS OF NOEL.”

O inițiativă drăguță, care îi provoacă pe oamenii mari să se joace din nou și să pună mâna pe stilou pentru a-i scrie, pentru prima oară după zeci de ani, unui moș fictiv haios și blând care ne îmbrățișează pe toți deodată, o dată pe an.
